Fix and Flex – Cutting Edge

On 24th June, Cutting Edge, KMC returned with yet another highly anticipated workshop,  Fix and Flex, this time, delving into some incredibly exciting Orthopaedic skills. The event took place in the Interact Lecture Halls and was graced by Dr. Saktthi Shanmuganathan from the Department of Orthopaedics at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.

Over the course of one evening, the participants learned not one, but two practical orthopaedic skills: Casting and Tendon repair. The workshop boasted custom limb models made specially for teaching plastering. The participants, ranging from second years all the way to fourth years, being divided into smaller groups with two teachers per station, each got an opportunity to learn and try the skill for themselves.

Casting was followed by Tendon repair. The standard suturing pads were cleverly modified to include tendon repair models to learn the skill on. Being divided into further smaller groups, each participant learnt suturing skills to bring together ruptured tendons.

After promising much in store, Cutting Edge did not disappoint with Fix and Flex, ensuring an evening of hands-on learning, with personal teachers and equipment. From applying cotton rolls and using Plaster of Paris for casting to learning how to suture two tendons together with their very own suturing kits and pads, there was much to take away from this spectacular workshop.
